When the standard highlight (= text =) isn’t enough, and you’re too lazy to write <mark> — Highlightr comes to the rescue.
🧠 What is it?
Highlightr is a plugin for Obsidian that adds a simple, handy menu for coloured text highlighting.
No more writing HTML by hand, no more digging into CSS, no more crutches — now you can highlight text beautifully, quickly, and in 2 clicks.
✨ Why is it cool?
-
Support for any colour theme (light and dark)
-
It works through HTML
<mark>— which means it doesn’t depend on the theme’s styles -
It keeps cross-platform compatibility (export to PDF, web, etc.)
-
You can configure your own colours, names and hotkeys
🔍 How does it work?
-
You select the text you need
-
Right-click — choose Highlight
-
A palette opens — you click a colour → the text gets highlighted with
<mark style="background: #colour;">
-
You can also assign hotkeys to each colour
-
You can remove the highlight via “Unhighlight”
⚙️ Setup
-
Go to Settings → Plugins → Highlightr
-
Add your colour: give it a name, pick a colour, click Save
-
The colour appears in the menu
-
Since version 1.1.2 you can choose: inline CSS or CSS classes
-
hltr-light-green,hltr-focus, etc. -
Good if you want to style highlights globally

📌 A tip from Elton
Use Highlightr not just for looks, but for managing attention.
It’s a tool for prioritisation, concentration and self-reflection. And when everything’s clear — it’s easier to act, and the brain rests.
Keep going?
